VETERANS OF UNDERGROUND NYC STREET ART BRING LATEST WORKS TO PHILADELPHIA
Internationally Acclaimed Artists Reunite at Unique Old City Venue, Nov. 4
Philadelphia, PA, October 28- The typical chaos of First Friday in Old City will be less typical, but just as chaotic, on November 4 with the closing reception for artist Brian Gormley’s show at Jules Goldman Books and Antiques. Since October 7, more than 100 of Gormley’s brightly colored abstractions have been on view for the artist’s first show in Philadelphia. The exhibition gives art-lovers a glimpse of an oeuvre that has been evolving for nearly three decades since the young artist made his name in New York’s underground art scene alongside compatriots like Jean-Michel Basquiat. On view as well will be paintings by Scot Borofsky, another product of 1980s Lower East Side street art, as a preview of his upcoming show at Goldman’s.
Gormley and Borofsky last exhibited together in 2007 at “Studio in the Street, Street in the Studio” at the Brattleboro Museum and Arts Center in Vermont, where they constituted two of the five artists representing their New York street art niche, two others being Basquiat and Keith Haring. Both Gormley and Borofsky have exhibited internationally, with Gormley’s resume including Dublin, Vienna, Prague, Zurich, Rome, and Mexico City. Borofsky’s work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York.
With their first shows in Philadelphia, Gormley and Borofsky are venturing into a more unusual kind of exhibition space. Jules Goldman’s store on Second Street overflows with books, art, and all other manner of things collected during his thirty years in the antique business. In contrast to the minimalist, sterile displays of most commercial galleries, Goldman integrates his featured artists’ works with his rich and variegated inventory of rare books, antique prints, bric-a-brac and curios.
Festivities for the closing begin at 8 p.m. Musical performances will include BRO, a psycho electro-shock lounge quartet; Lyle Rickards, using dulcimer, fiddle, and dobro to bring an old-timey feel; and psychedelic folk-rockers the Dharma Bums. The poet Michael Carter will also be giving readings of his work.
Jules Goldman Books and Antiques, located at 29 N. 2nd St. in Old City, is open from noon to seven p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and by appointment. Paintings and prints by Brian Gormley will be on view through November 10.
