Robert Petrick
b. 1945, New Jersey
Robert Petrick writes, "I have long been obsessed with nature, it's inhabitants, and how it worked. I feel a close relationship to nature. Much of my work is influenced by natural logic, form and design. As a mature artist I expanded my direction by first addressing the abstraction of form and then non-objective abstraction." After attending the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, to which he won a scholarship, he moved to New York City in 1984. There he began exhibiting his work in the Lower East Side's flourishing scene of upstart galleries, including the Red Bar, Nola Contendere Gallery, Emerging Collector Gallery, Pyramid Club, Danceteria, Nico Smith Gallery, and Colab. More recent shows include the
2006 D.U.M.B.O annual exhibition, the Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University in 2008, and the 307 Gallery Group Show in 2011.
In addition to abstract painting, Petrick has a significant portfolio of word sculptures, experimental letter forms, and letter form paintings which speak to his background in graphic design.
